Irvan Ridwansyah: Tips on finding your own lettering style

Artwork by Irvan Ridwansyah @_rdwnsyh

Hello, I’m so happy to be able to share my lettering experience on Val’s blog. This time the focus is on how to find your own lettering style and some useful tips to help you find it. I hope that my experience will be helpful for you guys.
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Irvan Ridwansyah. I’m a lettering artist from Jakarta, Indonesia. I love creating lettering work using the brush pen script that is modern and dynamic. I also love exploring typography layouts and trying out different brush pens to practice my brush calligraphy skills.
Ok so let’s get straight to it.
In my opinion, the key in finding your lettering style is consistency and honesty. Simple, right?
The first moment that I started to have my own lettering style was roughly in 2017, when many friends could easily recognize my work on Instagram. At the time, I was consistently using one of my favorite mediums: Posca markers on black paper. The lettering style I was using was mainly modern script with a dynamic flow. Because I really love this style, it was easy to develop it. Not long after that several lettering/type-lover accounts reposted my work, and friends told me they could recognize my work right away, even when people did not credit me back. Until this day, I still use the same lettering style but it took time to develop my skills. This is not something that you can get instantly. Focus on creating honestly from what makes you happy then eventually your own lettering style will come through.
Often times the biggest problem people face is that they don’t know where to start. I will try to share some tips from my own experience that are hopefully helpful for you guys.
Make a list of the lettering styles that you like. Be honest with yourselves at this stage, and avoid choosing lettering styles just because you want to look cool. Once you’ve got that list, try all of the styles you’ve collected and see which style you are most comfortable working on. Out of all the styles you’ve tried, there should be one or two styles that you find suitable for you and that you can develop further. Focus on those styles because they have great potential.

For example in my case, I really like lettering styles such as modern script, vintage, roman, italic, copperplate, and even Victorian. When I was practicing, I discovered that I could develop modern script and the vintage style better than Victorian and Calligraphy Copperplate. Because of that, I decided to just focus of those two. I think it’s better to just focus on one or two lettering styles because that will help us develop our own style. Every now and then it’s okay to try a different style too because that will add to our lettering skills.

Look at a lot of references. Try to find lettering style references from the Internet or books. You can even look outside of lettering for references, such as music, film, illustrations, paintings, etc. This can help inspire us when we work on a lettering concept. But how do we avoid imitating someone else’s work when we want to use their work as reference or inspiration? I believe that an artwork is created through the combination of a concept (idea, expression, feelings) and the skill of an artist. So when you are studying an artwork as a reference, study the basic technique, not the concept of the artist. In the context of lettering that means learning the basic techniques of letterforms, shading, mixing colors, or making layouts.

To enrich the concept, we can learn from literature. For example, books about a style of lettering from a certain era, such as Art Deco, in the 1950s or 1960s. Not only from lettering, but finding concept references can come from other areas, such as illustration, photography, watercolor, animation, books, movies, and many more. Therefore, we can get a variety of inspiration. Then you can process, combine and add based on what you like to produce fresh ideas.

Consistency. When you have chosen certain lettering styles as references, for example vintage, do lettering with vintage theme such as in the 1950s-1970s consistently and for a long period of time. Eventually, your friends will notice your vintage-themed artwork. Like for example, we can easily recognize artwork from IT’S A LIVING with his monoline script and vibrant colors, Ian Barnard and Stefan Kunz with their typography-lettering, Nick Misani with his fauxatics style. They create works that are true to what they like consistently, so people can easily identify the artwork and instantly remember the creator.

Practice regularly and set goals. Without consistently practicing, we won’t be able to create our own style of lettering. Arrange goals every week or month, so you will gradually grow.
In conclusion, we can find our own lettering style by consistently creating from what we like best. Choose a lettering style that we can easily develop, and increase your references to enrich your basic techniques and lettering concept. Hope these tips are helpful and useful for you guys.

Pertama-tama, perkenalkan dulu nama saya Irvan Ridwansyah.

To copy or not to copy, that is the question.

Hi! Let me first start by saying thank you to everyone who has shown love and support for this campaign #inspirationvsimitation. So many of you have shared my recent blog post “ An Open Letter To The Girl Who Sent Me a DM ” on Instagram. It warms my heart to know that this spoke to a lot of people, and I love in particularly how some of the newbies in lettering have found the article helpful. The goal has always been to help others and to encourage people to do better. Now, it has come to my attention that there are artists out there who are completely okay with people copying their favorite artist’s work, or any work for that matter. Some even encourages it. I believe this causes a bit of confusion for some people, if not a lot. So you may ask, “What are we supposed to do then? Is it okay to copy or not?” If you’ve read my previous blog post than you’d know that I do not recommend copying people’s artwork. I personally suggest that you focus on copying techniques and th

Go At Your Own Pace

I woke up yesterday morning to an email from Mye De Leon . This email was a great reminder that I think a lot of people need to hear (myself included). Let me quote you some of the words from her email: “ Creating for social media should never be your number one priority! There are way better reasons for you to focus on. Create because you want to: Practice and better your skills. Develop your own style. Share a message or a technique with your followers. If your purpose for creating is because you need to post on Instagram, it'll eventually burn you out.” Well, let me tell you that I have been there and done that. I originally started posting my lettering mainly to practice and document my progress, which eventually led to developing my own style. I was so dedicated to practicing that I made a commitment back in November 2015 to practice lettering everyday for 100 days. It was awesome! I could see how quick I was improving. It was hard work, bu

"Make Instagram Great Again" // A Collaboration With @just.drawing.words

--> Artwork by @just.drawing.words & @valster73. Do not use without permission. I think it’s safe to say that I’m not the only one who misses the old Instagram days, when you could just go to Instagram and scroll down to your heart's content and see the posts of all the people you follow, with no algorithm telling you what you should or should not see; where we had the freedom to make our own judgment on what we wanted to see and not, without having to spend so much time choosing and engaging just so that these posts of the people we follow keep appearing in our feeds. So when I saw this campaign/initiative by Matthieu Tarrin (IG @tarwane ) and James Lewis (IG @jamesllewis ) about making Instagram great again, I knew I wanted to participate too. Part of the challenge of this campaign was to collaborate with another creative person, so when Sonia from @just.drawing.words and @soniaydesigns approached me to do a collaboration with her for this, I was more th
